Drug Rocephin Linked to Serious Injuries and Deaths in Alabama and Tennessee
FLORENCE, Ala. (January 23, 2025) – According to reports in the past 24 hours from the Alabama Department of Public Health, in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there appears to be an unusual increase in patient injuries and deaths possibly associated with the antibiotic Rocephin (also known as Ceftriaxone). While no final determination has been made about the exact cause, many of these possible Rocephin injection-related incidents have emerged in hospitals and urgent care clinics across North Alabama and Tennessee.
What Is Rocephin?
Rocephin is a commonly prescribed antibiotic designed to halt or slow bacterial growth. Although it has been available since the late 1990s, the latest reports—at least 11 incidents so far—have prompted healthcare providers to investigate potential contributing factors.
Suspected Contaminated “Batches”
In the Shoals area (Florence, Tuscumbia, Sheffield, Muscle Shoals) and parts of Tennessee, some experts suspect that specific “batches” of Rocephin may have been contaminated or improperly manufactured, leading to severe reactions. However, investigations remain ongoing, and no official conclusion has been reached.
FDA Oversight
Under Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, manufacturers of FDA-approved drugs must follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) to ensure safety and efficacy. Moreover, the FDA monitors reports of adverse events and patient harms associated with prescription drugs through its MedWatch program. Despite these requirements, an estimated 1% or fewer of all drug-related injuries are formally reported to the FDA. Critics argue that the agency may take too long to respond to sudden spikes in reported adverse events.
Local Hospitals Exercising Caution
Out of an abundance of caution, some Shoals-area hospitals and clinics have pulled Rocephin from their shelves. North Alabama Medical Center recently announced such a measure, and several other healthcare providers have taken similar steps, per AL.com. As of now, the FDA has not released any specific guidance or recall directive, though local health professionals continue to monitor the situation closely.
