(January 23, 2025) – According to reports in the past 24 hours from the Alabama Department of Public Health, in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there appears to be an unusual increase in patient injuries and deaths possibly associated with the antibiotic Rocephin (also known as Ceftriaxone). FDA Oversight

Under Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, manufacturers of FDA-approved drugs must follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) to ensure safety and efficacy. Despite these requirements, an estimated 1% or fewer of all drug-related injuries are formally reported to the FDA. Out of an abundance of caution, some Shoals-area hospitals and clinics have pulled Rocephin from their shelves. North Alabama Medical Center recently announced such a measure, and several other healthcare providers have taken similar steps, per AL.com. As of now, the FDA has not released any specific guidance or recall directive, though local health professionals continue to monitor the situation closely.
